BYOD: If you have a band program, you are already doing it!
Come join an open discussion with David Faires, a middle school teacher who has completely reformed his instruction by treating his iPads/smart phones the same way he does students personal musical instruments. David argues that "We have been doing Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) for years in Band and Orchestra so we already know how to do this!" Come join the conversation as we explore his ideas of how schools can use the policies they already have in place for band/music programs to move toward a 1-to-1 environment.

True Grit or the Marshmallow Effect
True Grit or the Marshmallow Effect Researchers have found that grit, self-regulation, is more important to success than IQ, grades, or even SAT scores. In the 60’s at Stanford University, Walter Mischel did a series of experiments testing the willpower of children. Follow up studies showed that the kids who were able to delay gratification years later had higher SAT scores, better social skills, even lower body mass. In this presentation will examine the research on grit, particularly that done by Angela Duckworth and Carol Dweck. I will be sharing ideas about how grit can be taught, plus tons of books on the subject.
