Equity in Education
This presentation will focus on invigorating the learning of individuals who work with diverse students, and aiding them in recognizing themselves as agents of change. The topic of privilege is often controversial or threatening. Yet when members of the dominant group acknowledge its existence, recognize the advantage of their race, and become conscious of how they can be more equitable in their teaching, they often realize their intrinsic capability of seeing the world differently, and become more effective agents of change. We will also explore how privilege can be manifested in learning situations and how those working with students can empower individuals how have not traditionally been empowered in our educational system.

True Grit or the Marshmallow Effect
True Grit or the Marshmallow Effect Researchers have found that grit, self-regulation, is more important to success than IQ, grades, or even SAT scores. In the 60’s at Stanford University, Walter Mischel did a series of experiments testing the willpower of children. Follow up studies showed that the kids who were able to delay gratification years later had higher SAT scores, better social skills, even lower body mass. In this presentation will examine the research on grit, particularly that done by Angela Duckworth and Carol Dweck. I will be sharing ideas about how grit can be taught, plus tons of books on the subject.

Hidden Among Us
In the spring of 2014, WCSD decided to reopen a school in the polygamist town of Hildale, Utah. There had been no public education in this town since the district closed their school in 2001. The decision to reopen a school in the predominately polygamous community was a chance the district was willing to take. Many questions surrounded the decision but only time would tell if the district made the appropriate choice to bring public education back to a community that did not have formal education for more than a decade. Come enjoy this fascinating presentation of the journey they took in the challenging task of opening a school and bringing education "out of the ashes" and to the forefront of rebuilding a community traumatized for years of disillusion, mistrust and tyranny.
